The Parent's Weekly - Issue 07
What Great Coaching Gives Your Child - May 2026

Gavin Grenville-Wood
Founder & CEO, TigerTOTS Golf · PGA Fellow Coach
This week's issue is a little different. The article I have written is technically addressed to coaches, but I wanted to share it with you as parents, because I think you deserve to understand exactly what we are asking of the people who stand in that room with your children.
When you know what a great early years coach actually does, you will understand why the environment, the programme design, and the person delivering it all matter so much. And you will be better placed to recognise it, and to value it, when you see it.

From The Blog · For Parents
I wrote this week's article for coaches. But I am sharing it with you because I think the most important thing a parent can have is an understanding of what a truly great early years coach is actually doing in that session with your child.
It is not about swing technique. It is not about hitting targets. A great early years coach is shaping how your child relates to physical challenge, to effort, to failure, and to trying again. They are influencing something that will stay with your child long after they have forgotten the name of the drill.
"The great early years coach does not build golfers. They build people who are capable, curious, and confident in their own physical potential. The golf is the means. The person is the outcome."
When you understand what the coach is doing, you also understand why the environment and the programme design matter so much. Read the full article to understand what it looks like from the outside too.

1. Watch the coach, not just your child
A great early years coach is often doing their most important work when they appear to be doing the least. The restraint, the patience, the quiet adjustment of the environment. That is skill, not inactivity.
2. The environment is designed with purpose
Every station in the golfing playground has been built to present your child with a problem they can solve. When they figure something out for themselves, they own that discovery in a way that instruction alone can never produce.
3. Your presence is part of the programme
You are not an audience. The way you respond to your child's attempts, with genuine curiosity, with patience, with delight in the small moments, is one of the most powerful developmental forces in the room. The coach knows this. Now you do too.
